From January 16, 2024, new requirements apply to site owners and developers serving ads to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK.
To comply with this requirement, you need to use a Google-certified consent management platform (CMP) integrated with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF).
To keep serving ads and receiving revenue in the applicable regions, you need to complete the necessary steps by January 16, 2024.
So, we'll go ahead and set up the GDPR message shown to applicable users in the EEA and the UK for the site.
Creating a GDPR message
1. Sign in to your AdSense account
2. Click [Privacy & messaging], then click [Create] under European regulations
3. On the "Create a European regulations message in just a few steps" screen, click [Get started]
4. On the "Create a European regulations message in just 3 steps" screen, click [Create European regulations message] and the [Edit message] page opens
5. To choose the sites where this message will be shown, click [Select sites], choose the sites you want, and click [Confirm]. * The target site needs a page with a privacy policy, so enter that page's URL in [Privacy policy URL]. If you don't have a privacy policy page, you'll need to create one first.
6. Choose the language for this message. Default language: if the language of the user's device can't be determined, or if the [other language] you selected doesn't exactly match the user's device language, the message is shown to the user in the default language.
7. Under [User choices], choose whether to turn [Do not consent] on or off. Turning it on gives users the option to not consent to ad partners and their purposes.
8. (Optional) Tick the [Close (do not consent)] checkbox to add a close icon to the message. Users can click the close icon to close the message and refuse consent to ad partners and their purposes.
9. In [Message name], enter a descriptive name so you can tell messages apart easily. This name appears only on the [Privacy & messaging] page and isn't shown to users.
10. (Optional) Edit and format the message to match your site's editorial and design standards.
Creating a GDPR message for auto ads
Here are the steps for creating a GDPR message to show on sites using auto ads.
1. Click [Ads].
2. Click the icon for the site where you want to show the message.
3. Click [Privacy & messaging].
4. Click [GDPR]. The message builder page opens. If one or more GDPR messages have already been created for this site, the most recent is shown. If none have been created for this site, a new message is shown.
5. Choose on or off in the [Do not consent] dropdown.
6. Enter the URL of your site's privacy policy.
7. (Optional) Add a logo to the message.
8. (Optional) Edit and format the message to match your site's editorial and design standards.
9. Click [Save].
10. When you're ready, set the message to published.
